| Vineyard Notes: | The 2008 growing season started out slow with cool temperatures in the spring. The summer was consistent and warm. Hot August weather provided perfect ripening conditions as the fruit neared harvest. Due to the slow start to the vintage, harvest was on average 10 days later than in recent years. |
| Winemaker Notes: | It could be the wind, aridity, mild temperatures or scrappy soils, but for whatever reason Eastern Washington produces some of the most profound Merlot this side of the Gironde River. One of our favorite sites is the Champoux Vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills appellation. The wines from Champoux have a way of commanding your attention, not with overt aggressiveness, but more with persistence and complexity. Our 2008 has everything you would expect from great Merlot: cassis, rose petals, cedar, cherry cola, raspberry, cocoa and espresso. It also has the depth, body and structure that will allow it to improve over the next few years. |
